Thanks to a reminder from Sister Josephe, we would like to let you know that we are getting things in order for our 2008 Holiday in Ireland that is only a week and a half away.
We fly out of O'Hare on Saturday, August 30th, around 7:30 P.M. and "fly to morning" as a stewardess poetically announced on a previous flight.
So, we arrive at Shannon Airport on Sunday morning, August 31st, around 9:30 A.M., after dropping off others in Dublin first. (Aren't we the considerate ones?)
Then it's a shuttle ride to the car rental offices and onto "the wrong side of the road" and north to County Mayo---with Sue navigating and repeating the mantra:"Left, left, left" so that we stay on that wrong side, especially at "roundabouts."
The roads are great for about the first 30 miles north out of Shannon. They are all "carriageways" (expressways) with large, double-lanes even at the roundabouts. But, shortly after the town of Ennis in County Clare, things start to get a little narrower, with sharper curves.
So, in addition to the mandatory rental car insurance, we are thinking of adding more insurance by stopping for Mass in Ennis at St. Peter & Paul Cathedral along the way. (Let the "lighting of 'penny candles' begin!") The internet has been wonderful for letting us add details into the trip. We only had to go to the "CatholicIreland" web site at http://www.catholicireland.net/ to find a convenient church service---and there are lots of churches and services in Ireland---so we will try to be "holier than thou" in no time.
After another brief stop just outside of Galway City, County Galway, for lunch, we should reach our first destination by mid-afternoon---that is Hotel Westport in the town of Westport, County Mayo, where our first of four weeks in Ireland begins.
So, hopefully we are "hail and hearty" for our 2008 Holiday in Ireland that will continue through Sunday, September 28th, when we fly out of Shannon for an evening arrival at O'Hare and join you as two more of those "left behind in America."
